Our friends at Blow-By-Racing in Boca Raton, FL have been building a new Frankenstein project staring with a new Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin and adding a polished ROUSHcharger. It seems like a perfect marriage of utility, good looks and rip roaring performance.
The Sport Trac Adrenalin was created by Ford to boost sales of the aging Explorer lineup by adding a lowered suspension, big 20” wheels and special trim inside and out. The Adrenalin of course can be had with the same 4.6 liter 3-valve engine that has powered the Mustang since 2005.
So we have the looks, the handling and the truck sized utility. Lets add horsepower. Blow-By-Racing, a ROUSH parts dealer and well-known tuning shop started with a polished 2005-2009 Mustang ROUSHcharger kit right out of the box. Some things needed to be fabricated because while the engine is virtually the same, locations of some components and the 6-speed automatic transmission are not.
Blow-By-Racing fabricated a new cold-air-intake and some wiring harness modifications to make everything come together. New cooling hoses are added and custom made brackets were designed to locate the heat exchanger down below.
Once everything was in place for start up, Blow-By-Racing created a custom tune to make it all work. The first dyno tests with the stock ROUSHcharger pulley resulted with 370rwhp and 335lb-ft. rwtq. These numbers are baseline with only 6 psi and a nice comfortable 11.4:1 air-to-fuel ratio.
But they are not stopping there. As of this writing Blow-By-Racing is working on a “Stage 2” version of the kit utilizing a smaller 2.57 pulley and 90mm idler. Another tune and we could be pushing 400rwhp or beyond.
Blow-By-Racing will be offering turnkey packages based off this new project for all Ford 4.6 3V equipped Explorers and Explorer Sport-Trac models.
