Roush Exhaust

I have not got a chance to hear a stock 05/05 mustang GT's exhaust so I do not know how much different the stock Roush exhaust sounds compared to a stock GT. However I was curious in why Roush bothered putting on their own mufflers? They don't add any power and they don't seem to add any dramatic increase in sound. Why didn't Roush just ad the tips and leave the Ford mufflers on there?

I have been in both GT and roush with stock exhaust set ups, and both sound about the same. I could not tell the difference. the rear of the roush's exhaust cut out is inward about an inch to 2 inches and using the stock GT exhaust with the roush tips would not fit.

The factory Ford mufflers would not allow Roush to use their tips. As 05 Hotrod said, they are offset to the center of the car. The factory Ford mufflers are opposite side offset inlet/outlet oval and the Roush mufflers are same side offset inlet/outlet. When I bought my Roush they had a GT sitting next to it on the lot. I thought the Roush was a little louder than the GT, although not so much that there was a huge difference.

Oh ok thanks for the response. If I were to add say flowmaster mufflers is it easy to attach the Roush square tips to them so the back of the car looks the same?

Thanks for the link. For those of you who put offroad pipes on your car, what do you do when it comes around time for inspections?

Nick,

I just had Flowmasters put on my Roush this week. If you are going to do it, use part number 942544. You will need two of these, and the list price is $113 each. I got them installed for $300 including the two mufflers. It takes some work to trim the mufflers to fit and to correctly line up the tips so it was worth it to have a proffesional do it for me. Good luck with whatever you decide to put on your car.

No inspections here in FL. But it is a simple bolt up. You can swap out in less than 30 minutes w/o a jack under the car.

Sounds quite good I may add.

I didn't get anything yet. I am finishing up school and will be back home on Long Island where I live in about 3 weeks, in which that time I plan on adding the exhaust. I think I am actually going to go with just an offroad x-pipe or h-pipe. I feel that will give me some added power as well as a much tougher, but not too loud sound. I'm going to stick with the Roush mufflers and stock manifolds. I just remember when I had my '01 GT vert I had MAC catback and an offroad x-pipe and that was way too loud and raw sounding for my own preferrences. I think,(or hope) that by adding just the offroad pipe I will be satisfied with the sound and should gain a couple more hp. However, I am not sure which pipe to go with. I'v heard the x-pipe gives more high end power while the H-pipe adds more low end power and a throatier, more preferred sound. Anyway, what do you all think of this?

Nick,

Both X and H pipes have their fans. What you described as the difference is consistent with the discussions that have taken place here on the forum. You might be interested in 05-1947's comments. He did just what you are thinking of doing and would be a good resource for you...

I get nothing but compliments on how the car sounds with the O/R H, and I am going to see if I can get a video of it for everyone. Keep in mind that I am not all that great with uploading video's so I will try to get is ASAP.

I've had X and H pipes, the X was way to raspy for me, the H is perfect, and according to a bunch of people that I've talked to about it the X-pipe would give you more high-end flow if you're running over 6K RPM at lot ie: Nascar, etc.
I have a link right under my sig that shows the H-pipe sound, well with Flowmasters but at least you can hear the throatier sound part of it

I've got the flowmaster super 40's on the car right now. They sound better than the Roush mufflers IMO. My buddy has a set of the Magnaflow mufflers that come with the side exit exhaust kit. Damn, that thing is loud, makes my Roush sound like an electric car. I was going to get something a little louder, but I don't want to drown out the blower whine . I saw a post a while back where a member put some stainless, straight through mufflers on his 05-06. It looked real good.

Yes, I installed a Bassiani catted X-pipe- (made a big differance) sounds nice and throtty matched with the stock Roush muffs- just what we were looking for
