Roush Drag Pack Mustang 2007

FROM STREET TO STRIP WITH ROUSH DRAG PACK MUSTANG

LIVONIA, Mich. (Oct. 31, 2006) - As a direct result of more than a
year's worth of testing, research and development for the ROUSH
Competition Line of performance parts, the company has decided to take
the next step and offer a complete race-ready Drag Pack Mustang that can
roll from the street to the strip.

The ROUSH Drag Pack Mustang is the first drag racing purpose-built Ford
since the 1969-70 Super Jet Cobra. This car had 335 horsepower, oil
cooler, enhanced connecting rods, modified crankshaft and a choice of
3.91 or 4.30 Traction-Lok gears. In 1970, the Mustang Boss 302 was also
available with a drag pack option but that only included different gears
and external oil cooler. Since then, for the past 36 years, no
manufacturer has offered a drag specific car, though there have been
several parts packages made available for customers to install
post-title.

This 2007 Ford Mustang is based off the flagship ROUSH Stage 3 and
designed for safety, durability and adjustability. A prototype has been
racing in the Modular Muscle class of the NMRA and tested almost weekly
at Milan (Mich.) Raceway.

"When we returned to having a drag racing program last season I
challenged the team at ROUSH Performance to build a car that can be
driven to the track, have the tires changed to slicks, and perform on
the drag strip," said Jack Roush. "This Drag Pack Mustang is the
culmination of those efforts." Roush has a fondness for drag racing that
goes back to when he began his motorsports career in the late '60s with
the "Fastbacks," a group of Ford engineers that pooled their money to go
drag racing. He personally oversaw the development of the ROUSH Drag
Pack Mustang.

Some of the parts that are unique to the ROUSH Drag Pack Mustang include
an upgraded flywheel and clutch, a one-piece driveshaft with safety
loop, a polished 4:10 ring and pinion gear set, upgraded posi rear
differential, bracing on the rear axle housing, new lower control arm
brackets with two attachment positions, and high-strength axle shafts
with extended wheel studs.

The suspension components are highly adjustable and include tubular
steel upper and lower control arms with rod ends, tubular steel panhard
rod and relocation bracket, rear stabilizer bar relocation kit, and
single adjustable front struts and double adjustable rear shocks.

Other unique elements of the ROUSH Drag Pack Mustang include having the
battery relocated to the trunk for better weight distribution and the
inclusion of an external on/off switch, a tachometer with shift light
mounted to the dash, smaller ROUSHcharger* pulley and engine calibration
with a maximum of 7000 RPM. The car will ship with both street tires and
a set of Mickey Thompson rear drag racing tires.

There are also a variety of options available, including carbon fiber
hood and fenders, line lock system, four-point bolt-in safety bar, open
system chiller box which provides maximum intercooler performance,
SFI-approved bell housing and upgraded transmission shift fork pads, and
straight pipes for the exhaust system. A ROUSH short throw shifter is
available with reverse and fifth-gear lockout.

More than 200 runs were made in the testing of the vehicle, each
challenging the functionality and durability of the parts. If a
component didn't perform as anticipated, failed, or the ROUSH engineers
saw some type of premature wear the design was modified and then
re-tested on the track. The 430 horsepower car has achieved several runs
in the 11.9-second and 113 mph range.

Plans call for only 50 ROUSH Drag Pack Mustangs to be built, and they
will be exclusively offered through Brandon Ford in Tampa, Fla. For
pricing and more details, contact Brandon Ford at (813) 246-3673 or
visit online at www.TampaBayFord.com.

Many of the parts that are included on the ROUSH Drag Pack Mustang are
also sold separately for existing car owners. A complete listing and
pricing can be found at www.RoushPerformance.com or by calling (800)
59-ROUSH.

Sounds like a great "Straight-Away Car"! I am looking forward to seeing how some of those parts will benefit my Naturally Aspirated Stage 2....Gears, Flywheel & Clutch, Shifter w/Lockout etc.

I am glad that only 50 willl be made, keeps the "Gotta have one" factor high adn the market flooding low!

Good Job Jack!

I REALLY HOPE some of those parts become available soon. Has anyone seen what they will look like? I looked on the links but no luck. Did anyone else find them? Keep your head down over there Black Gold 380R. I've dodged bullets for 3 rotations over there.

Here is the thread with pics from the actual press conference. Not bad for a self proclaimed auto journalist. Whatever.

Excuse me while I pick myself up off the floor. For that much I could build a street/strip car that would make the Roushes 11.9 times look slow.

Now, if Roush would get their act together and get an official price guide for these cars then maybe it might be an option for fun and collectability. But why pay 55-60K, drive it off the lot and know you have NO CHANCE in hell of getting anything close to what you spent when you decide to sell. I understand you are going to take a loss with ANY vehicle you purchase, but the deficit ratio the Roush cars present it is not worth it.

Someone said in another thread if they had to do it over again they would by a USED Roush. AMEN BROTHER....... I second that and say you are better off buying a used Roush because a new one is ridiculous expensive for what you get vs. what you lose .

Totally agree!

Being a "newbie" to the Roush world, I have been getting a first hand education on the value of these cars. Hopefully Roush comes out with something to help protect the value of their (our) products.

The drag pack is interesting. Absolutly you can build a much quicker car for waaay less than that. But, If only 50 are made, and somehow the value is reconized, they might be one to have.

Funny story, before I bought the 360r, I was looking at a GT500 and ALMOST pulled the trigger. The dealer I was at was actually very helpful and one of their main arguments was that the Roush has no value on paper. Didn't matter, I was buying it for my wife and she liked the 360r better.....

Well this car is really meant for people who will use it for drag racing. In that way, you will never get resale off a worn out race car.

If you saw the entire list of parts they add to the car on the mechanical drivetrain side of things to make it stand up to racing as a job, you would see that the price tag is actually about the same or less than it would cost to build one just like it.

OK, now we are comparing apples and oranges. I never said I could build a ROUSH Drag car for less than 55-60K. I said I could build a street/strip car for less than that. The purpose of a drag car is to go from zero to the end of a quarter mile in the shortest amount of time possible. Half the stuff on this list does NOT make the car faster (just more expensive). So, you can take most of that off the list because my intent is to run fast, not look like a Roush doing it.

I have been around Mustangs and drag racing a lot longer than I have been around Roush. I guarantee I can take a fox body 5.0 Mustang and make it run low 10's for far less than 55-60K and that includes the price of the car.

Like I said if Roush can help an owner out and get an official price with the limited number produced it might be worth it. However, if you take dollar for dollar under the current circumstances the Roush is WAY over priced for what you can day based on the parts available in the aftermarket.

Yeah, his goal was to offer professional/weekend drag racers a car they could buy and race all season without breaking it. It is also a platform for more mods, but us a solid foundation.

It is easy to make a car to go fast, but harder and more expensive to make one that will do it 200 times without breaking.

It's not a product for everyone, and honestly price really doesnt matter when it comes to toys . This thing will never show up in consumer reports. But, it provides the guy who wants a turn key drag car to have fun with an opportunity for instant gratification - meaning he wont have to spend a month or two under it in the garage or taking to shops to get all the stuff done.
