When I was at the local tire shop on saturday, 2 days ago, they had these new type of ASR, made by nitto, called Motivo's. They only came out Dec 2011.
They are supposed to be the new hot ticket for an all season radial..with a treadware rating of 560...and a 60,000 mile guarantee. 4 longitudal groove for rain, and special 3D sipes. I think they were X or Y rated for speed. Does anybody know anything about them. I'm thinking more in terms of a half decent rain tire in the fall + winter. They are supposed to be almost as good as a performance summer tire in the dry...and superb in the wet.
I'm not impressed with the NT-555's in the rain. That might improve somewhat, once my BMR stuff arrives, but I'm not holding my breath. For now, it's 8 x rims + tires, and swap em out in April + Oct.
I ordered 4 of these new NITTO Motivo's 2 days ago, on wed. I had to put a deposit on em. They will not be here till June. They were cleaned right out. Local tire place sez they are literally flying off the shelves across canada. They can't get em in fast enough. They have sold more of these in the last 2 months than they do of the other popular brands in the last 12 months. As long as they are good in the rain, etc, that's good enough for me. Apparently the Nitto Motivo's are supposed to be Nitto's version of a Michelin Sport pilot-2...but at a cheaper price.
I ordered 4 of em in 235-50-18 to be used with my oem 8" x 18" rims. My oem pirelli 235-50-18's are all but trashed. They have to be replaced by next oct anyway. Interesting enough, the trashed pirelli's are almost hitting the tread markers..and are hitting em on 2 of the tires.... but they still work good in the rain for around town, and hwy trips. The NITTO-555's I have on now in 255-45-18 front..... and 275-40-18 rear on the staggered 9"-10" chrome rims are 3 steps below useless in the rain...and outright dangerous.
We will see if the Hype and hoopla on the Nitto Motivo's is justified or not...... but won't find out till end of Oct..when I do the switch. Folks may be buying em just for the 60K mile warranty. In canada, they warranty em for 100K km (62,137 miles). Since I only intend to use em 6 months of the year, they will easily last the life of the car.
In hot, dry weather, the Nitto-555's stick like glue in twisties, I'm very happy with them. They are a superb street tire for normal use (except wet). If the Motivo's are as good as the 555's as all the hype indicates, I would also use em when it comes time to replace the 555's.
On another note, I measured the distance across my replacement rear 10" x 18" bullitt rim... and it is exactly 11" from outside lip to outside lip. The front 9" x 18" rims measure exactly 10" wide. Is this normal.
