    Cooling Fan

Hi all. I have recently noticed that my cooling fan seems to always be running. The Roush was installed about month ago, but i don't recall hearing the fan as much as I do now. I'm thinking that maybe I just didn't notice it at first. It might be one of those things that after you notice it the first time, it is always there. Maybe I am driving with my windows down more now too. The fan comes on within seconds of turning the car on after sitting over night. The temps have been in the low to mid 70's here in the morning. After warming, the temp reading sits just under the halfway mark like always. Has anyone else noticed this?

Sometimes tuners will lower the temp that the high speed fan turns on. I noticed this on my car after a tune. The guage will not show a difference but I noticed on my digital temp that my car ran a little cooler than before, which in my case was a good thing. Unless it is cutting on right when you start the car cold, I would say your good.

I noticed the same thing late last summer, after the M90 was installed on my 2010 GT. It was sitting on the west side, and in the blazing sun all day. I hadn't used it since the previous everning. My car is black. I had the hood open, and was checking something.. and had just turned on the eng. Thought I heard something..and sure enough, the fan was on.... on its low speed setting. I think they all have a 2 x speed fan. This was with the Roush Tune.

BTW, that is just one of the many things you can adjust yourself on the X3 box.. from VMP. When you get a tune from VMP.... you also have loads of other stuff you can do some tweaking on. VMP allows the end user to adjust the LOW speed fan from 170-230 F and the HIGH speed fan from 180-240 F.
Check this out. For anybody, this is way too cool, and icing on the cake if you have an automatic. http://www.vmptuning.com/pics/AutoUserAdjust.jpg

Notice how you have some control over the rev limiter. And for folks with an auto... that means one rev limit for park + neutral... and a 2nd rev limiter when in gear !

http://www.vmptuning.com/store/index...=299&parent=97 Scroll 2 thirds the way down till u see... "SCT flasher on-device adjustments:"

•Your specialty custom tune file will include SCT on-device adjustments (click for available parameter list)
•Our tunes are designed to be very repeatable and safe. However, if you have the opportuning to datalog your vehicle we recomend you do so. We will review these logs at no charge. With our tune the air to fuel ratio throughout the RPM range at Wide Open Throttle should be between 11.2-11.8:1.
•We do not recommend adjusting spark without consulting with us first.
•You may adjust for different gears or tires.
•Automatic cars may firm up or soften the shift points at all throttle positions.
•Automatic cars may increase or decrease WOT shift point RPM.
•We safely raise the rev limiters in our tunes, we do not recommending increasing it further. ( note, user adjustable)
•The speed limiter is removed, but don't exceed the speed rating of your tires or driveshaft. (note, user adjustable)

Justin at VMP tells me that as of 2009, Roush started disconnecting the knock sensors in the roush tune, on their blowers. Now how stupid is that. VMP puts the knock sensors back on line in their tune. With the roush tunes, there is nothing the end user can tweak. IMO, me having control over a whole bunch of important paramters PLUS a much better tune, PLUS having the knock sensors re-enabled, justifies the X3 box hands down, regardless of whether you get a smaller SC pulley or not.

Thanks for the replies. This puts me at ease a bit. My SCT doesn't have the fan adjustments though. I think I am looking in the right place for them. When installing a tune, they should be under adjust options correct? I have the options of spark, a few idle options, gears, and tire revs, but no fan options. Is there somewhere else I need to look? I think that option was not included in my user adjustable options.

    Thanks

Where did you get your tune from. My SCT X3 just got shipped last week from VMP... + the new tune has been pre-loaded into it. Dunno if other tuner's let you tweak stuff as much as the VMP or not. I think its a tuner thing..and not a SCT thing. IF you can adjust the fan speed... dont set it too high, or you will cook stuff. Some tuners may well have taken that option away from you..so there is no way you can maladjust em too high.

Mine was tuned on the dyno at VMP. It appears he set the fan to work as it is. I just wanted to make sure that nothing weird was going on, but this appears to be normal. If he set it up this way, there must be a reason, so I am not looking to change it since this is pretty common.

    Thanks for your help.
