Zombies coming or not, it all comes down to the same thing, preparedness.
Zombie prep makes you ready for much more than just zombies; Natural disasters, economic/governmental meltdowns where there is complete chaos, pretty much anything.
The Zombie Survival Guide is a good book.
Basically, if you prepare for zombies, you are set to pack up your gear, get mobile, and take out zombies, or hoards of people gone completely mad.
