Unhappy pics of a Wrecked 98 Cobra.

Well, here's a few pics I took of the 98. I'm thinking, unfortunately, that this may be a Stage 1 Cobra, which is really too bad that it has a destruction title. It IS going to multiple good causes, but still, even if it's just a Cobra Convertible, still too bad it had to go out this way! We're trying to track down the original owner, if possible, see if we can find out the cars history, there is a paper inside that say "McCracken Ford, PA" in it, and it has the Cobra's serial number, but who knows.

And I'd love if someone could tell me about the Toolbox, I can't seem to find anything, did some Cobra's come with this toolbox from Ford, or did Roush put a Cobra emblem on the cars with a toolkit when they had them? I've seen a pic before, but can't find it now. Anyway, here's the pics, I'd say enjoy, but I dont' think you will. Justin

The Front.

The back is really clean.

Roush intake, who has one of these? I'd like to see what filter it needs and such.

Rear window

And the Front.

Our missing valance!

And the tool box.

AND while I'm at, an old rusty Chevy! haha just so you know, this is likely the last GM I will ever own. Too bad Ford didn't make Chevelles! But, it is a 70, and Ive wanted one forever. Thanks for looking! Justin

Whoa that Cobra looks fixable to me! Can't it be restored & sold with a salvage title? Whats this destruction title? Lotsa people fix totaled cars.

Sure looks like a real Roush...too nice a car to be destroyed but now you got parts! Thanks for the pics...those chevelles can be pretty nice cars too!

Those are period correct decals and cold air tube. They changed the decals in 2001 and the cold air tube in 2001 or 2002 I believe. The coin that came in my 2000 tool kit has a cobra impression on one side as well. Not sure how that compares with everyone else. Any serial number sticker in the passenger door jam?

As the owner of a 98 Stage 3 Cobra...it looks pretty real to me. Our toolbox has the Cobra emblem on it as well. It came from Roush that way. The coin inside also has a Cobra on it. Just because there is no Roush serial # doesn't really mean anything...we have one only because the people who built it nagged Roush for 4 months to send us one.

Good luck with the car..ours has over 56,000 hard driven miles on it and still runs like it is brand new!

Well, here's another one! haha!

When we got the 97 Stage 2 home:

What we found in the glove box, along with all the Correct stage 2 Suspension:

And how it looks now:

And, as far as we can find, the onyl other 97 Cobra Convertible known to exist. Bob down in Texas owns it, it's really nice. He's on here, I forget his FNname though!

sorry for all the pics!

Thanks! Yeah, my parents 97 has got 72,000 on it, and it runs fantastic, stock motor, but it still pulls really nice! We got lucky (as if finding the car on Ebay in the first place wasn't lucky enough!!) and found a very nice Roush toolbox on Ebay right after they got the car, and it happened to be a New one, with the correct age tools too, I didn't even know that the tools, and the way they were laid out, changed in the newer years, so, when we get a rear valance on the white one, it will be as original as it was new. I am thinking the Cobra tool box is even rarer than the Roush badged one, so this one may go in the White car too.

And as far as serial numbers, I've spent FAR too much time online and on the phone tracking stuff down, and from what I've gathered, if you have a number in a 98, you're lucky, it seems like half of them did. This 98 has no serial number, I've looked high and low. From what I know, the 96 and 97's just DIDN'T have a serial number, unless it was physically built at Roush, and then it was hit and miss, and there are no records of it. I guess the only good thing about not getting the parts for them anymore is that there won't be a bunch of people trying to make fake 96-97 Roush's and passing them off as real because there is no way to prove them wrong!

And, I'm going to do some more checking into getting this car retitled, but from what I've heard, it's very unlikely, the Florida title states in bold print "For destruction or parts only" and the line that maybe gives us a loophole is this--"cannot be retitled in Florida" so maybe we can get something worked out here in SD, but it would always have a salvage title. As much as I'd like to have a 32v Dual Cam in my Fairmont, I'd rather have this one fixed. We'll see! Thanks for reading, Justin

Hope it all works out for you because it will be well worth it. Those old Cobras were belt to run.

Good Luck

Well, unless someone knows how to get a vehicle reinspected or something, so we can get a new title, it's looking like since the state of Florida put a "certificate of Destruction" on it, it can't ever be retitled again, anywhere. We're trying to figure something out, but we were told there's no way it can be done. The car is definitely fixable, and it would be worth it, but if we can't I guess it comes apart. Justin

Well i know in LA you have to repair the vehicle (keep reciepts) then get it inspected by the state police. Then you can apply for a "rebuillt title".

hmmm.... I may have to relocate! At this point, we're getting close to doing about anything to get this car back on the road. still trying to verify 100%, but looked at it again last night, it sure looks authentic. I really wish Roush kept better records back then.

Take a look at the pcm. See if there is a Roush sticker on either side.

Yeah, I had actually read that a couple days ago when I was perusing the forums. I'll check the Red one tonight, the White one just had a new top put on it, so it's not home yet. But when it gets there, I'll see if either have them. It seems unlikely, that they'd put a SN on the PCM but not put a doorjam sticker or something in, but you never know. I'll certainly check, and snap a couple pics for reference. Thanks, Justin

Getting closer! Just got off the phone with Progressive insurance, they said that they can reverse a Certificate of destruction, but they need to have the last owners name to do that, so as soon as I get that, they can look it up. if they can be convinced to reverse it, to even a rebuildable title, we can transfer it to South Dakota! It will always have a damaged title, but honestly, I don't really think it matters, especially if it's real! I'll keep digging! Thanks everyone, Justin

That's what I was hoping you would find out! I have a strong feeling you are the proud owner of TWO early Roush Cobras! Sure would be a shame to destroy such a good looking piece of history! Good luck! If need be one of us can provide you an address to re register the car ...???
