Unhappy ROUSHGUY and Dallas crew....I need your help....

I need serious help......I can't find a single place in this town
that can refinish slotted rotors. Does anyone know of a place
that can do this ???? One of my front left brake pads wore
down and scraped the rotor up a few weeks ago. I got all
the parts I need to fix it....other than finding someone to
refinish the rotor. I would like to have it refinished instead of
throwing down hundreds of dollors for a new rotor.

I've tried, Autozone, Just Brakes, Lonestar Performance
and the damn Ford Dealer I bought the S3 at.

The Ford Dealer claims they can do it, if I bring the car in (they
won't do it if I bring just the rotor in). Plus theres the whole issue
of having to leave the car there for a few days for something I
can do in a FEW HOURS. All the other places can't do slotted
rotors or know of anyone that can.

Fn'Finally.....After the 15th place I've called (seriously...I've called
15 different places), I finally found someone that can do it. They
are a brake specialty shop in dallas (American Power Brake and Clutch).

So I'm done freakin out.....for now.

Roush2960,
It can be done, but not on the machines they refinish normal
(smooth) rotors on. They have to machine it one side at a time.
Lucky for me, I only need one side of the rotor finished.

It can be done however all the holes and the slots have to be chamfered otherwise you will eat up pads real quick.

I don't know how cost effective it will be to have done vs just buying new ones.

It's a major cost difference, the shop is estimating the cost
at around 30-40 bucks vs. a few hundred for the new rotor
($360.00 plus shipping ).

Matt,
I'm getting it done (or seeing if it can be fixed) tomorrow
morning. I'll let ya know the final outcome.

That sounds awfully cheap to me!Are they going to rechamfer the holes after they turn them??

Holes, as in cross-drilled? LS has the 14" Alcon setup - no cross-drilling in there.

Okay but even the slotted need to be rechamfered just less work.

I had it resurfaced today and the put the brakes back together.
The surface was smoothed down to the point that there are no
more slots on the rotors surface that was scratched. I also
noticed that the other rotors surface is getting close to having
worn out the slots of that rotor too.

Has anyone else seen this on there S3's rotors (14" Alcon slotted
Rotors) ????? Is this typical of a rotor to wear down over time ?
Should I go out and replace the rotors soon so they are all slotted
again. If so, It looks like every 25,000-30,000 miles I'll be putting
a grand into the breaks alone (pads and new rotors).

Exclamation

Well sounds like the style pad on there is aggressive enough to wear the rotor that much.

This also sounds to me like possibly to much was taken off the rotor in thickness to be safe. What is the thickness of the rotor now?

These are performance brakes so yes you are not going to get the longevity of the oem.

I've yet to have slotted. I had cross drilled on my 90 &93 GTs and saw them wear about twice as fast as the solid rotors. IMO they're worth the $$ to have the extra stopping power........ especially in Dallas traffic.

These rotors are one time use only.
My mechanic called Alcon themselves about the rotors to see if they were cheaper and they said they should not be turned and that were one time rotors.
You might get away with changing pads a couple times but no turning!!!!!!!!!!

That just doesn't make any sense to me...."one time use only".

Not that your mech isn't telling us the truth. But I think I'll
call Alcon and Roush and figure this out tomorrow.

We turned a set of Roush 13's... I wondered... But, when they called Roush.. they said to try that first ( had vibration on a car with less than 10,000 miles) We cut them down... seemed to help... but the rotors lost that zinc coating and didn't look as good.

So... I guess they can be turned.
