3.8L Rear end question

I found out the other day that my 2001 V6 does not have a 8.8'' rear end. Is this true and if so, what is the size?

I purchased 8.8'' rear end 3:73 gears from Roush a while back. Obviously these will not work, so does anyone know if Roush makes a V6 3:73 gear combo? If not, anyone want to buy mine?

7.5 rear end...which is very weak....Roush does not sell the gears for our rears, but ebay, summitracing, gefracing, etc will.....

You can strengthen the 7.5 with a rear end girdle. Don't quote me on this but I think I read somewhere that it increased it's strength by 35%? Someone correct me on this if it's wrong.

what exactly is a rear end girdle and what does it do and what does it strengthen and what does that do? Sorry but my knowledge is limited in the rear. Thanks for the help though

Had to laugh at that one. The 7.5 should hold up unless you put a lot of power(400+) to it. At least that's what I have gathered on it.

I've already seen sixers running procharger blowers putting close to 280rwhp on the stock 7.5 rear.

AZdevil i HIGHLY suggest that you just get rid of the 7.5 and put in an 8.8, the 7.5 has almost no strength to it. Believe me in the future you will want to supercharge it and the 7.5 will not be strong enough to support it. GET THE 8.8

YUp! I think it would be in everyone's best interest to just swap it out. The 8.8 is way better and from what I understand it would be very much worth the few extra $$..

how many extra$$$'s? And is it something I could do in my driveway. I replaced a 94 GT rear axle a few years back and I was just wondering if swapping an 8.8 rear end could be done at home just as easily.

If you are going to take it to a shop it will probably be around 600, but you could also do it yourself too.

Some say the upgrade is good, some will tell you that you'll never squeeze enough out of the V6 to hurt it.
If you've got the time/money to do it, then go ahead.
I didn't have either, so opted for the possi 7.5 rear.
If you're going far enough with the V6 that you'll put 350 plus hp/tq to the wheels, do it, just to be safe.

a posi is this. The v6 stangs only spin one wheel, when you drive all the force is being put into one wheel, your left wheel, and when you move the other wheel catches up. on the GT's, or v8s, they have a posi which allows both wheels to spin. Go out in your street and do a burn out and you will see that only one skid mark will be made with you v6, do it with an 8 and 2 skids marks will be left.

By the way AZdevil if we ever meet, your dead...................nah just kidding we all at one point didn't know anything about a car

yeah basically. If you are going to have more then 300 hp in your car then i highly suggest getting an 8.8, but if you just are going to leave it be then just get a T-lok and 3.73s

I'm putting down 175 at the wheels ( ) and hopefully this summer I'll be going for the 8psi vortech set up which will put me in the mid to high 200's, so I guess I'll have to consider moving up to the 8.8. Also, will I have to upgrade internals also? or would an intercooler help enough that I could get by w/ stock internals?

i had about 210 rwhp when my car was a V6 and i crushed all the internals of the rear gear box on a take off. So from experience that rear end SHOULD take more but it doesnt.

the biggest problem wiht the 6 is the engine itself. If you supercharge it, you will probably through a rod or something like that. You basically will have to rebuild the engine.

At 8 psi you're still good. That is assuming you've taken care of the motor up the this point. I've talked with guys up in the mid-teens for boost on stock internals, but they baby the car and hardly ever push full boost into them.

I'll be running 9 with my blower. At that level, I'm guessing the first thing I'll need to replace will be my clutch and tranny. Of course, I beat them like a rented mule when I had my other motor under the hood.
