Turning Radius

My 03 stage 2 has the factory roush 18"s and ive noticed the turning radius sucks!! Is this just because of the larger wheels??

I have a 02 stage 3 and I have the same exact issue. It is terrible. Much worse than my 94 cobra with the 255/45/17s. Mine even has a little groan when I make low speed right hand turns (like into a parking spot). The dealership says it is the limited slip....those guys have their heads up their asses. I think I just need to check the lubrication on my suspension.

no it's the Mustang that sucks. I feel like a complete tard when I'm doing a u-turn b/c my mustang has always had a horrible turning radius. I thought it was just me until my friends were telling me the radius sucks. I have 17'' GT Alloy rims so I don't think it is the rims but I'm sure it does help the problem.

The huge tires and wheels would be to blame, I would think. There is a physical limiter in the steering rack that is one thing, plus, based on physics, the wider tires will have a different end result as the smaller tires.

I have a 2004/S2 with 18's. I've seen moving trucks pull off a u-turn that I had to back out of and straighten out.

I've never seen a moving truck take corners like my Mustang though

Aww come on now there is a really easy fix to tighten that turning radius. Its called your right foot. Next time just blip the throttle real quick and the tail will swing right around. You'll be able to do a u-turn and stay in the left lane I swear.

The steering rack has stops on it to keep the big rims from rubbing. So the turning radius s not as sharp as a stock mustang. Another one of those extras nobody knows about engineered into Roush mustangs. jim

I wouldn't exactally say nobody. Most of the original posters and daily forum members probably are aware of this as well as many more engineering aspects as well.

lol I was gonna say the same thing! The fun of owning RWD muscle

A short turning radius is a good thing, it (usually) translates into better/more accurate handling because movement at highspeed is less drastic, although if it is shorter just because of stoppers, that doesn't do anything for handling.

You ever seen the turning radius on a formula car? Practically nothing. The Formula 2000's I drove couldn't turn for shit if you needed them to at a dead stop, but they sure made negotiating a turn at 150 a lot easier/harder to screw up. This was one of my first questions at JR USA's school and they told me exactly this, because you simply shouldn't ever have a reason to turn that far when at speed. The only time you would turn the wheel that far at speed is on accident, double reason the raidus is so much smaller, besides the fact it allows for more exact and precise steering input from the driver. And mechanically, it does increase handling limits because the natural imperfections in the road cause the steering system to move in response, and a shorter radius/higher steering ratio will decrease the effects of this, because there is natural "wiggle room" in links and other parts of the steering system that allows for a certain amount of play even if you bolted the steering wheel in a certain position.

Too bad Roush didn't really change the steering ratio to make the radius smaller instead of just using stops, as that would have made the car a lot easier to drive/handle better at high speeds. Oh well, maybe this is a mod someone can figure out how to do cheaply, and remove the stoppers!
