Any car without cats is prone to backfire, too much exhaust and not enough engine, it's not necessarily the muffler itself. I've heard bonestock GT's with the only mod of an X-pipe backfire like there was not tomorrow.

In some cases, backfiring is caused by a leak in the exhaust system. Check that out as well.
