reliability with these mods?
hey everyone, my name is mike, making my first post here and i have an 02 roush stage 3 and just wanted to ask a few questions about mods
been doing quite a bit of research on pulleys tuning etc. and just wanted to get a few opinions from more knowledgeable awaiting install: i have bbk long tube headers O/R x pipe tunable induction CAI now should i need a tune with that installed which would make the car run lean from what i have read. correct me if i am wrong. not trying to blow up my car. but with all that installed which should be by the end of the season. but while im at i was wondering if doing a 75mm pulley would still be safe/reliable for the motor. i don't know what hp range that will be in with those mods etc. i would obviously get a tune with the pulley unless it isn't needed but would the car still be decently reliable with those mods? thanks in advance Mike |

You shouldnt need a tune, but with those mods, it will be well worth it to get one. Roush tunes are very conservative, so with a tune, you can gain hidden ponies. Also, another mod you should think about getting is a 2.8 blower pulley, gives you another 2 psi of boost.
Welcome and good luck. Where are you from?

With those mods that you've stated that you have there won't be a reason for a tune. Your not really changing much there. A tune will be helpful but not required. With a 75mm pulley your not going to be hurting the motor with a good tune. All of the things that you have talked about i've already got and more and i daily drive mine. So reliability will not be a problem. Your biggest thing you need to do is find a good reputable tuner, not someone that says that they can work on a mustang. With your stage 3 your going to have to change the computer to do a custom tune so you need someone that really knows what they are doing or has done it before.

Mike:
You DEFINITELY would benefit from a custom SCT tune for your Roush. At that point, I'd even opt for a custom dyno tune on your vehicle. You're taking the cats off the car and those long tube headers are moving the upstream oxygen sensors much farther back than they originally were - not only would a base tune turn off the check engine light that will come on without the cars, but a good tuner is going to be modifying the oxygen sensor response delay time functions to get the car back to where it wants to be. As far as the induction goes, this is what I'm assuming you've got for the Roush... ![]() You're not only changing the location and clocking of the mass air flow from the Roush tune, you're adding bends and an open element filter before the mass air sensor. Those things need to be tuned to. Will the car run without a tune? Possibly. Will it run correctly? Absolutely not. What will my driveability be like without a tune? Extremely poor, if any. Am I leaving HP and fuel economy on the table? Absolutely. As mentioned, since you have the full exhaust on the car, you can swap to the 2.80" upper supercharger pulley - that's where your real power gains will be seen on a supercharged car, especially after opening up the intake and exhaust tracts. But...ONLY...WITH...A...CUSTOM...TUNE. A lack of a tune or a poor tune are the number one and two causes of detonation, and therefore blown motors and shrapnel piles. These aren't 83 notchbacks where you can put the bottle in Friday night, bust out your timing light, pull a few degrees out and change the jets in a few minutes and you're ready to go. These are computer calibrated machines that with much smaller cubic inch engines can be pushed as far or farther than their dinosaur predecessors, provided you have someone with experience and intelligence behind the keyboard modifying the parameters which make the computer tick. |

thanks for all the info. if im getting tuned it will definitely be a custom dyno tune since i, doing it anyway.
yes thats the intake i have as well thats the information i was nonetheless looking for to see what im getting into. might as well do it all at once instead of one thing here and there and getting tune after tune. and i know there is a lot more computer involvement in newer cars. i turboed an 02 spec v and had to research and mess around with all that for tuning and what not so i know where your coming from. although it would be nice to jsut slap parts on and adjust according with a timing light haha. |
