Roush Primps for Its Silver-Screen Debut
From Inside Line....
LIVONIA, Mich. — Deep inside the Roush skunkworks here, an elite team is prepping the fleet of Mustangs that are set to appear in the upcoming action film Run. It may be hard to believe, but this is Roush's debut in the movies, says John Clark, company spokesman.
You may not immediately recognize the 2008 Roush Mustangs in Run, since they are designed to look like NHRA Funny Cars. They feature an 8-inch hood extension, calculated to give the Mustang a "mean look," and oversized 22-inch rear tires.
The most compelling cosmetic touch is a prototype paint provided by PPG in "ArgentChromium" that costs $1,700 a gallon. It is a matte silver that should be eye-catching on the big screen. Despite allowing Inside Line access to the Run Mustangs, the tuner would not allow any photographs at this point. In an interesting footnote, the mechanics working on the Run Roush Mustangs say the car that will be used in the movie's "beauty shots" only goes about 20 mph.
Clark says Roush was sold on the project because it was described as a postmodern competitor to the 1968 Steve McQueen thriller Bullitt, which featured the legendary actor driving a Mustang. Bullitt is best remembered for its iconic car chase around San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase scenes in movie history. Clark characterizes Run as "basically a 51-minute car chase."
Run is being filmed in Argentina and is directed by John McTiernan, the well-known American film director whose résumé includes such action films as Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October and the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. IMBD describes Run's plot as centering around "an Interpol agent [who] uncovers a major conspiracy while pursuing a murder suspect in Argentina." It is set for a debut later this year.
