black spots on chrome wheel

hey
i have some crusty black spots on my chrome wheels. i took a brush to it and didn't seem to do much. i tried a rag/finger and some elbox grease and nothing. i am sort of bummed about it.

what is causing it? how can i get it off? i did read up on this forum and saw some chrome wheel sealants...which i could use after its clean but i think i need something that has some abrasion to it but will not damage the chrome finish (wheels are less than 1 yr old).

i read about something called wenol blue and red....is it any good? got something like it?

what do the experts recommend?

thanks
bill

It is hard for me to tell without seeing the wheels in person. Since they aren't very old, you shouldn't be having problems with them already. Are you sure it isn't buildup of brake dust? This will do what you are talking about. I have a polish called Metal Rx that I use on chrome wheels all of the time. I've brought some pretty nasty looking wheels back to new looking again. I've even had wheels that have had surface rust that got them looking new again.

Is there any way you can post a picture of what you are talking about?

Sounds like it could be tar/dirt?

I sometimes get those black spots on mine too, it is sorta like oxidation or something, but I use never dull by eagle one and it breaks it up. you just need to work on it for a lil while.

here are the pics. i dont think its tar or bugs.

the wheels are new...less than a year old. weather has been bad lately....so its probably been a couple months since last wash. its my DD too.

i guess i need to step up my chrome cleaning regiment....a good polish to get this stuff off and a weekend cleaner to keep them shiny and protected.

wavgby....i'll check out your suggestion too.
thanks all
bill

I think that is just buildup, it looks like it is just in the crease of the wheel.

A good chrome cleaner/polish will take that out. Be careful with what you are using on chrome, you want to make sure you are using a chemical polish and not a polish with abrassives. Never Dull does have light abrassives and can cause fine scratches on the wheels if you look at them up close.

I've used some 00 steel wool and some regular dish soap on the inner part of the chrome wheels before and had great results. After that I take chrome polish to it and the look like brand new. Good luck! The steel wool won't damage the inner part of the wheels and you don't need to use much of any pressure at all.

i am a bit relieved that is seems like a small issue at face value. what is the name of the product i should buy?

i tried steel wool on some old 5 slotted mags i used to have in high school and it totally messed those up....i'd like to try a cleaner/polish first.

The Metal Rx that I carry on my website is a great chemical polish. It also works great on aluminum and stainless. I use this quite a bit. I've tried so many chrome polishes and this is by far the best I've used. The Metal Rx will clean, polish, and leave a layer of protection behind.

Justin, is this a product that you use in addition to your wheel seal?

For wheels that are in worse shape I use the Metal Rx first. If wheels are already in good shape the Wheel Seal will work just fine on its own.

Ah, good to know! I'll be placing an order for some more supplies with you very soon! I need some tire shine stuff and leather conditioner and... sounds like the Metal Rx may be just the ticket for my Del Sol wheels.

Yeah...that's because they were aluminum mag wheels...I would expect those results.

the black spots are most likely from accumulation of brake dust. I have found that especially with the Alcon fronts; the brake dust is MUCHO corrosive to the chrome. Being that my Mach is also my daily driver, I can't spend the time cleaning the wheels as they would need to keep the dust from ruining the chrome finish. I have recently taken the appropriate action to hopefully slow down the process. Wheels were taken off the car and cleaned thoroughly. This is what was left.

After using some Blue Magic liquid metal polish and much elbow grease, all the black-nasty was gone. (Blue Magic can be found at local parts store), this is the result.

I then slathered them in Obsessive Detail's wheel seal and polished them to the point that I had to put on my welding glasses to install them on the car.
