Yikes! $304 for a spring!!

Alright, so my airbag light went on the other day so I made it a point to get to the dealership to have it checked out. Well I just got a call from the service department and the guy said it will cost $304 (parts&labor) to replace a "clock spring" located behind the steering wheel.

I am definitely not going to skimp on an airbag, but has anyone else heard of this? Just seems WAY expensive but I guess I should expect this from a dealership

Any ideas to save money but still get it fixed or will I probably just need to bite the bullet and have the dealership bend me over

Was $240.00 to have the CS replaced in my explorer, been told it is not that difficult a fix.

The "clockspring" is not a spring at all, so its not just a single expensive spring.
The "clockspring" is the movable electrical junction between the steering column and the steering wheel.
It is a multi-piece plastic assembly that encases a ribbon cable that is like 10' long and coiled inside of it. The coil resembles a clockspring, hence the nickname of the assembly
