Unhappy Flat Black Stripe A Failure

Even with being very careful, the flat black stripe on my BlackJack has picked up several marks. Also, oil from your skin (hands) will discolor (make darker) the stripe as evident on my rear wing (closing the trunk lid). It almost requires that you wash it when cold (on the hood) because the water will leave immediate waterspots that are next to impossible to remove. And if you put more than towel weight pressure with a microfiber cloth, it will leave marks (as I found out trying to remove junebug guts). Overall, I'm not impressed with the durability of this stripe material. As a previous owner of a '69 Mach 1, the painted flat black was not much better. More than anything I believe it to be a product of the matte finish.

While not affecting the performance of my Roush, it is a disappointment at car shows to have marks on a $60,000 car. I hope they come up with something better, or I'll be replacing the stripe every few years.

Well thats a bummer to hear but I was wondering how that was going to work. Always iffy to try something new. Hopefully there will be something come out tat will help you like a protective coating you can put on it or something.

Curious to see if anyone else is having the sam problem (which i imagine they are).

What particular product are you referring to? And, do you have any ideas how it affects the matte finish?

At this point I guess I'll have to wait to put any cover material on it as I don't want to cover the "marks" making them permenant. Good idea for after I get new a new stripe.

Never did understand why Flat black was used in the first place.
Only way I can see to make it work would be to put a flat clearcoat over it.
If that exsists.

So far we aren't having any problems...but it has only been washed a few times and not driven much since it is getting mods. We have thought about putting something on it, but not sure what...still checking into that.

Just remembered talking with someone about really bad water spots on their black paint from an automatic sprinkler system. She said they tried every kind of wax and cleaner...nothing work. She got busy on the internet and discovered that vinegar would take care of the problem...sure enough she tried it with a little water and all the spots came right off. Not sure how it would work on the vinyl but I guess it is worth a try.

Jerry said to try Mcquire's Quick Detailer Mist. He has used it several times on his strip and it has always cleaned it off.

Maybe you should post this to the Obsessive Detail area or send a PM to them. After hearing all of the fellow owners gush about their products you'd think they may have a solution... if there is one.

Regarding the matte black on the 69 Mach 1's.... I owned one of those and the matte black seemed to be very durable ......... of course I spent most of that time in "a haze" so my memories may be somewhat garbled However, I don't recall ever having problems with that surface.

Good ideas! I've been affraid to spray anything on it, fearing it would be a "no turning back" mistake. But if Jerry has tried the detailer mist I'll try it. Of course that still leaves me with the marks that I've accumulated (rear wing and hood). And not having been a show/detail nut before, I'm going to need lessons on how to care for this black beauty. Like how to clay. Before buying my BlackJack, I had never even heard of this before. And I've heard different stories. Some have said to clay the finish and then wax. Others have said that these new finishes do not need to be waxed. All I know is that after 4 or 5 washings now, there are some swirl marks starting to be apparent in the bright sun.

The Macquires rep told Jerry on a black car to not wipe the paint in a circular motion...only wipe in straight lines. This will prevent the swirling look.

Is the Flat Black on the BLackjacks painted? When we decided to use flat black on our dealer cars we went with vinyl instead of paint. Frontier Ford has complained about problems with the finish also. With vinyl there is no problem

My father has used Maguire's quick detail spray on his without any problems. With yours being a daily driver is going to put all the odds against you in keeping it flawless. Whenever you want to get together I can show you everything I've learned or figured out to keeping your car looking show ready. I've done it all with claybar, polishing (I have a porter cable if needed), paint cleaner, etc. you name it I'm pretty sure I have it and you're more than welcome to it all. Sounds like a detailing get together (and a good excuse to have a few beers) whenever you can. I'll PM you my number.

Justangs detail spray Rocks, order some from him, and get about 20 MF towels also, the best.

I think the trick is taking care of it properly from day 1. We have washed ours about 5 times and have used Macguires quick detailer on it...with no problems, of course it is also kept in the garage when we are not driving it.

Congrats on the new ride...what # is it??
