snout bearing likely bad

i am pretty sure the snout bearing is gone on my S3. it started happening after normal driving...i am not hard on the car at all.

its pretty loud right now. i put a short piece of wood against it and them my ear to my fist...sure sounds like its coming from the snout. i even have a very short video but no where to host it.

question: what are my options? what is recommended? i have the smaller 380R pulley on there too.

i just read they have replacement snouts? i dont know anything about that.

should i pull the whole blower and send it to roush?

any help is appreciated...
bill

There is a thread floating around this week about a rebuild of the snout. Seems like the fleet is getting to the age where this is cropping up.

blower snout rebuild

Check with Roush too, I would think they probably sell a replacement snout assembly. Could not be too expensive.

Ck out stegmeier, if the front end is gone, the entire blower needs a rebuild.

Its hard to tell if its the bearings or the Supercharger coupler.. My best guess is the coupler.. It will cost you about 15.00 ( oil replacement ) to find out..

Drain the oil from the front of the case. There is around 5-6 oz in there. Remove the 8 bolts.. Use a rubber mallet and tap the backside of the pulley on top and sides to try to get the snout slightly loose. Use a screwdriver to pry between the snout and the alum spacer plate taking care to not mar anything.. The snout is held in place by two hollow dowl pins on the bottom corners.. Once you get that off, you'll be able to see if the holes in the coupler are worn.. You can also then spin the snout by hand to see if its the bearings..

Google eaton m90 and there will be pictures in the thunderbird/supercoupe forums that will help..

i just talked to ed martinez at psesuperchargers (they have a website too). he is the owner....seemed hugely knowledgeable and happy to speak on the phone. his customer service alone has me learning towards his shop.

he mentioned that was a huge run of off-spec pulley shafts a while back that are tearing up low mileage toyotas, roushs and GMs. he has seen many of them. result is the pulley never fully seats and it wears the coupler and/or nose. said the coupler fix is temp fix only; it will eventually tear it all up.

he recommended that i stick a q-tip in the drain plug and look for gray or sediment. if it looks clean, he said remove the belt and see if the pulley has any play it in at all (due to shaft issue). if yes to these, just send in the nose. he can correct the shaft issue, correctly seat a new pulley and send a nose reinstall kit with everything needed.

worse case scenario, he can rebuild the whole thing for less than replacement cost.

i'll try to keep this thread updated in case anyone else has an issue and needs the info.

update:

drained it and pulled the nose off. the oil is definately discolored. i could not hear anything unusual from the nose once i had it off...nothing from the case side bearings either. the coupler did not appear worn to me either.

i ended up pull the whole blower and sending to PSE superchargers. it cost me $110 to express ship it. i should know the diagnostic by end of the week.

more on this xmas bk soon.

wrapping up

likely the final report....in case this might help future searches:

diagnostic showed the nose shaft was out of spec. Ed Martinez at PSE SC said it was a common thing he has seen on low mileage eatons with bad nose bearings. the bad shaft tore up the nose bearing and wallowed out the pulley. the case bearings & rotors were ok.

he rebuilt the nose, replaced the shaft, sourced a new 2.8in pulley, bathed the case bearings, rotors and cleaned up the whole thing.

PSE superchargers did well on customer service; didn't mind the frequent emails and phone calls. he was very open with info and charged me pretty much what he quoted. overall good marks for that

the blower is supposed to arrive today. i am tempted to put it back on right away but i figure i'll change the plugs while the thing is apart. there is also oil on the intercooler which pains me not to clean....the blower is so easy to pull though i might just procrastinate on that.

i have a 1 yr warranty on the work so the proof with be in the road testing i supposed.

i didnt find the stiegemeier website earlier because i didnt try enough spelling variations....above IS correct. not sure what they would have cost, but this one set me back $660 shipped to my door.

I too have had experience with Ed at PSE Superchargers,

Bought and had him installed a supercharger, total new suspension, big brakes, wheels, gauges and etc.,

What an amazing experience... shop floor is white, Ed and gang don't wear jewelry, no metal tabs in pants, cloth belt buckles, shop aprons and more,

Have been in the rebuild area for superchargers and it is just one well oiled machine,

Eds prices are fair, he is an honorable guy and he knows his stuff...you can't go wrong.

Call or if you can drive in and see for yourself, not many shops like this anymore.

if you want to try and keep all of the oil of the intercooler you can always install an oil seperator. Here is a link to steigmier about there rebuilding http://www.websitetoolbox.com/tool/p...+drive+rebuild incase anyone else is having problems.

final post on this thread. took a day off work to turn wrenches....just got it all back together. it runs like a champ again. it was SO much fun to drive it again. rattling noise is gone. it was not really all that hard to pull the blower and reinstall. always feels good to complete a little project.

i did change the spark plugs while i was at it. i have been gettting a recurring CEL. its a too lean code....and the plugs on the drivers side showed it a little....more white than grey. overall they were in good shape. i think its the O2 sensor....so that might be the next fix.

so at 36K miles, new plugs and newly rebuilt blower. if it doesnt rain tomorrow, i'm driving it to work.

cheers
