Windshield Banner Application

As some folks know, mostly in-part to D's flagrant blabbing at our last GTG () my windshield banner was badly discolored and peeling.

I now have a new one, and dont want it to peel or discolor again, so I want to know: How have you installed your banner (if you did it yourself)??

1. Soapy water to position and then squeegee

2. Position as best as possible, pray, and then apply dry.

3. You have a better method....please explain.

Thanks!

Contrary to what D heard in prison, go easy on the soapy water.

you don't even need the soap. just a spraybottle of water. May I suggest you measure from side to side a place a piece of tape or grease pen/crayon mark on each side evenly so it is centered. Also maesure on each side evenly from the top so it isn't crooked. BEFORE you spray water or apply the decal.

My vote is the Dry method, when I worked in a Vynal shop that was the only way we would do it. just do some measuring..... put a piece of masking tape down the center and do a half at a time.... and Remember the U is NOT centered...

An added hint. Do it when it is warm and dry outside. Rain and wipers will destroy a freshly installed banner. Just recently had one of our guys put a fresh one on my daughters car. 35 Mile commute home in the rain, 45 degrees and it said ROH, when I got home !!

I do mine dry. Get it centered, put some masking tape across the middle and on each corner to hold it in place. Lift up one side, peel the backing off to about the center strip of masking tape and tear it off. Use a graphics squeegee or a small body filler spreader working from the inside out, then finish it up on the other side.

EDIT: To add, give the window an IPA wipe down so there is nothing on there that can interfere with adhesion.

I had my sign guy make some in the same color as my car and he said to use the soapy water method.I did and he had to make me another banner because I couldnt get some parts of the letters to stick using that method. The next time I marked where I wanted the decal with masking tape and had my wife hold one side and I held the other while we carefully applied it .....dry.It worked for me but that doesnt mean much.

Do it dry,the only reason to do it wet is for bigger graphics so you dont get bubbles.

I've done about 3 already on my car (discoloring) and just ordered another set yesterday because some idiot thought it would be funny to scrab of the bottom of the R and now my car reads POUSH. Everytime I do it, I leave the original banner on, mask the left/right, top/bottom of the discolored banner with masking tape. Remove the discolored banner. I would recommend spraying just a BIT (not too much) because if you screwed up you can still move it around or just lift it up and start over. Lay the new banner onto the windshield and you should have already a nice masking outline of the original one. I've used this method and it takes less then 10min.

I ended up using the dry method. Just measured real well and besides a small wrinkle, it went on great. Looks better than the water method too. Hopefully this one will last.

I did notice my windshield wipers wipe over a large portion of it however, but it is in the exact position as every other 99-04

My wiper blades get a pretty good portion of the banner too. I just haven't wanted to get smaller wiper blades. I think it would look too funny.

If you use the soapy method how long so you have to let it dry before you peel off the backing paper?

You need Rapid-Tac. It is what we use to apply all of our vinyl and it works great!

I watched the shop do mine & they waited until they squeegeed all the air bubbles out then carefully peeled the paper off...so I guess maybe 2-3 minutes.
