Question P 51 problem

Before anyone says anything...I already tried the search...too impatient...too many to go through...too fnlazy

I know there was some discussion about the belts or springs or something on the P-51's breaking when they were fairly new...our belt is showing some fraying and we are trying to find that thread to see if it is the same thing or something else...we like to be ahead of the dealer when we take it in.

Anyone know where that thread is????

don't remember seeing a thread, but when we where at the track in Dallas in February and they had the P-51 there I remember seeing the belt starting to fray alittle on the sides.

I remember the thread, but I think it mostly dealt with the spring on the tension arm breaking.

Not sure about the previous thread either, but when the engine is cool, try pulling a string along the face of the pulleys....you might be able to see that either the idler/tensioner pulley or blower pulley itself is out of alignment, which can cause the belt to ride against one side and cause the fraying you're seeing.

Just a suggestion until you get a better one....

Thanks...that helps...Jerry is also going to compare the belt to the one on the Track Pak to see if it is wearing the same.

That's a good suggestion, but it won't work in this case. As a pulley manufacturer, you'll have to take my word for it. Each of the stock steel pulleys made by Ford have a different radius on the front and also a different tracking point. It would next to impossible to check the alignment.

Yep...thanks

heard from someone at RP and they said a little fraying is normal for the belt that is on the car...has something to do with the new Aramid material they use. Will let you know about the track pak belt as soon as Jerry checks it.

Look at the tensioner, it has been a problem on the blown cars, my car was sent back to mich. ,last year, they had the car for 6 weeks, and they finally fixed it.
it appears that when the engine is under full load( ac on , traction control off, ) the tensioner is run up against the stop, and it cocks and that is what blows the belts

hope this helps

The one and only P51a that I ever saw had a frayed belt.

Okay...finally looked at the track pak...no fraying. Took some pics of the belt on the P-51. If it is the aramid material they are using it most not be on the belts for the TP

Fraying

Fraying

Did a little research on the aramid material...it is used in the aerospace industries and manufacturing...conveyor belts in particular. It is very heat and fire resistant.

Get your selling dealer to check, We had 2 P51's and replaced the belt tensioner on both prior to sell.

Not to change the subject but I thought I saw red suspensions parts...does the P-51 share the elite stage 3 set-up (same as the stage 2 only painted red )

I know that Roush told you that a little fraying is normal....I'm sorry, but if they accept that as normal, then something is wrong. If your car was a few years old and had several thousand miles on it, it would be a different story. But, as new as your car is, your belt should not have that much fraying on the outside edges.....something is either misaligned or as other have said, an idler or idler bracket is flexing and allowing the outside edges of the belt to ride/climb one of the pulleys. I'm not an expert or a certified engineer, but I've been around enough belt driven equipment in my life, to know that something is not as it should be with your belt, pulleys and idler/tensioner.

Since these were new cars what made you think you needed to replace the belt tensioner...where there signs of wear, stress cracks in the tensioner....what??? Would kind of like to know what to tell someone to look for.

With a normal polyester belt, I'd agree. However, in this case, what she was told is correct. There is no problem with that belt or with the FEAD alignment.

my p51 has 400 miles on it and the belt looked the same as yours after 50 miles
