WTH is wrong with NASCAR!?!?!? Edwards docked 100 Points!

WTF is wrong with NASCAR?!?!? They docked Edwards 100 points for a stupid oil cap not being on? It doesn't even give him an advantage!!??!

Here's the article on ESPN

If they want every car to be even then put them all in IROC.
Whats next infraction for a hangnail that may scratch another driver.

What's worst is the fine for the Crew Chief. But like they said, "They don't care if you commit 100 penalties or one. They just don't care. We have to really look at that before we submit to the foolishness of that process." Everyone must play by the rules and if you give one team an exception over a "small" infraction, then every team will be claiming for an exception when they are fined. If Officials start defining every single individual rule in the book then you will have a big mess every time a team is fined because interpretation of every rule can be interpreted differently. Yes it sucks for Roush but I can see why they are fined, every team on the grid should be treated equally when it comes to breaking the rules

Here is Roush Fenway Racing's statement regarding the penalties on Carl Edwards, and his crew. They hit the nail right on the head. Apparently, a bolt broke somewhere that holds the oil cap on and Nascar wants them to guarantee that none of their bolts will ever break, during the course of a race.

Roush's statement as seen on www.jayski.com

Roush Fenway Racing Statement on #99 Penalty: Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith’s statement on the penalty given to the #99 team following Sunday’s Las Vegas race. “The bolt holding the lid in place failed in its purpose as a result of vibration harmonics generated by the car and the race track during the race. The bolt was secure enough to survive 225 miles of practice, perhaps up to 399 of 400 miles of the race and the scrutiny of numerous inspections. It’s a tough business for any race team to have to pledge $100,000, 100 points and a six race crew chief suspension as an indemnity payment to NASCAR against a promise forced from us by NASCAR that no bolt will ever fail its purpose under race conditions. We are currently evaluating whether or not the circumstances justify submitting to the unpleasantness of the appeal process, but from a competitive standpoint, we believe it is in our best interest to have Bob Osborne begin serving the penalty now. Chris Andrews, our chief engineer, will be at the track on Friday and Saturday to lead the #99 team and general manager Robbie Reiser will join Chris on the pit box Sunday during the race. We are confident that we have the depth of talent in our organization and the strength in Carl Edwards and the #99 team to overcome this penalty, should that end up being the final outcome of this unhappy episode.”(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(3-5-2008)

All in all, the penalties suck...big time!

Now Toyota says Roush did this on purpose(from Jayski)....

Toyota's GM says #99 knew what it was doing with lid: Lee White, GM for Toyota Racing Development, said Carl Edwards' team knowingly caused a lid to come loose on an oil tank in his Ford because it increased the car's speed during Sunday's victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards was penalized 100 points by NASCAR for the missing cover. Roush Fenway Racing has denied the infraction was intentional, saying a bolt broke because of a vibration. The team said it wasn't certain it achieved a gain in performance. White said the manufacturer's testing at wind tunnels in Germany revealed removing the cover on the oil tank (located in a steel box behind the driver's seat) resulted in 170 extra pounds of downforce, the aerodynamic measurement of keeping a car glued to the track. White also said video of a pit stop showed a member of Edwards' pit crew pulling on a right rear fender to open a 3-inch gap to an inner panel. Toyota testing showed that would create about 70 pounds of downforce, White said. NASCAR said the only issue with the car during inspection was the lid.(more at USA Today)(3-7-2008)Comment here

A part of me instantly wonders if Toyota isn't just jumping on the bandwagon against Roush not because they won but because of his outspoken stand against them in Nascar.

Toyota is rediculous and so is NASCAR.

All NASCAR is doing is digging a hole. They are making the sport too much like indy type racing if you ask me. And that just isn't going to fly for long. With Toyota entering, Stupid rules, new lame drivers, and more NASCAR is at a turning point that may lead them down to their own pit lane.

Remember this statement from Jack?...."to hand Toyota their head."

Actually, I following American Open Wheel Racing ALOT... and NASCAR is ALOT worse than Indy or the defunct Champ Car.

I'm wondering if all this sponsor jumping (Winston Cup to Nextel Cup to Sprint Cup) is for more money to pad Nascar's pockets or if the sponsors quit and don't want to have anything to do with it anymore.

About a year ago I heard a rumor that several of the drivers were discussing a "dream league" that was more of the 80's run what you bring type racing. Where the cars were built around the original car that they were using.

I thought for sure we would hear something else about it since the COT made so many cars obsolete that could have been used. I'm sure some of the tracks that are no longer part of the sport would jump at the chance to have racing back at their places.

Well Winston was a sponsor for years. There is a good chance that NASCAR went away from Winston for money, and also that Smoking is not really "cool" anymore. NASCAR trying to be more family friendly and all. Nextel was bought by Sprint so they changed to Sprint series to market their main product. Nextel is all going away. The Direct connect will be used by Sprint.

I hadn't heard anything about another series. But I think the cars should be more "stock cars". It is what the sport was built on, and really it makes more sense. These cars now and even the last generation have NOTHING to do with any street car at all. It's not like they even looked like the street versions. The motors are also nothing to do with street cars. Maybe they could advance HP and mileage by forcing the teams to use street motors as a base.

The more BS the less I care about the sport. I like the SCCA and such much more now. I don't like open wheel at all, less then NASCAR for sure. Too much technology and funky stuff for me.

Hoping Carl wins at Atlanta tomorrow and while doing his victoy lane interview points out to the camera that the oil tank cover is in place just for NASCAR and Toyota's benefit.

Probably so. Toyota is the top NASCAR manufacturer sponsor right now. They are going after ever track and some of the race titles. I know they are working on Charlotte now. Instead of the Lowes Motor Speedway it might just be the Yota Motor Speedway before long. Money talks in Brian Frances eyes. Shame Big Bill and Bill France Sr ain't still around to jerk some sense into him!!!
