Long story, quick rant, plea for help...

So the other day I take the 'vert out for a little drive and I notice that it isn't quite running as I expect it to. Idle is rough, acceleration is sluggish and choppy through 3k and the tone of the exhaust is letting me know that something is not right. After a quick stop at a local business I get back in and start it up before programming the GPS for my next stop. Car doesn't even idle for 2 seconds before dieing but started right back up and stayed running. As I'm driving to stop #2, CEL comes on and I sidetrack to the closest Ford dealership(non-Roush).

Wonderful employees there can't get to it that afternoon but at least agree to keep it garaged overnight. Next morning I don't hear from them til almost lunch when they say "we can't pull the codes because of the reprogrammed PCM, you'll have to go to a Roush dealer." Well this sounds odd to me so I call RP and they basically tell me the dealer is full of it. They also say that they are more than willing to help the dealer through any issues pulling the code. All the dealer has to do is call. I call them back and pass on this info. I'm told they will call RP to get it figured out.

I call back at the end of the day since I haven't heard anything and am told they didn't call RP but instead found another way to pull the code and it's throwing a mis-fire on Cyl 5(I think this is the 2nd from the front on the passenger side but would love someone to verify that.). They say they can look at a couple of things to figure out what the issue is but not until the next morning. Well I finally call late in the morning since I've heard nothing and am told that they won't do anymore diagnosing since it's a Roush issue. I can come get the car and will have to take it elsewhere. Well as I don't want to drive it far with issues I decide to just bring it home and figure out my next move.

After I get it home I pull the battery cause before it goes anywhere else I want to swap the GMS coil packs out for the original ones. Unfortunately that work has to wait as I had to get back to the office. Well when I got home from work I realized that I needed to reposition the car in the garage to deal with my lack of light. When I reconnected the battery, the CEL was gone and the engine ran fine. I took it for a little drive and found it ran just as I expected.

I'm at a lost as to how to proceed. Should I still pull the GMS coil packs? Is there a way to tell if one is bad? Should I still get it in to the Roush dealer to check it out? The service guys said something about a stuck valve spring could cause this but I doubt that would clear itself with just the battery pulled. Could there be an issue with the PCM and its "learning" abilities that clear out after sitting without power for a while then the baseline programming works as expected?

Hey Mike!

Sorry to hear it, man you are havin' a year huh? I don't have any answers, but can offer morale support anyway. Good luck, I'm sure somebody on here can explain what's going on.

I've had a problem like that too. Under full acceleration the fuel cuts off, but after pulling the battery and the second time the alternator, I have zero problems and the car runs like a scalded dog, but after a week or so it reverts to the same problems. I sometimes wonder if it is the tune.

Maybe sometimes you just need to reboot the old computer (PCM). Since there is no reset button (that I know of), disconnecting and reconnecting the battery should do it. I also think that the disconnecting of the battery will also clear some of the PCM's memory which might have cleared your problem. Don't know for sure though...

I bet it's the coil packs. I would change back to stock and see if it happens again. I had something like this happen to be before with a aftermarket coil pack.

I was working with GMS and they treated me pretty bad, so I will not buy anything from them.
