Question Need help! Steering Wheel Shakes at 60 mph and above....

The wierd thing though is the shake is intermittent. I can set the cruise at any speed above 60 and the shake happens every 4 seconds.

I only just noticed the shake as I rarely drive the car anywhere that requires higher speeds than 45.

I have recently added new Toyo Proxes4's, less than 100 miles. A complete BMR front end package consisting of non adjustable control arms and K-member. New re-man steering rack, steeda bump steer kit, MM caster/camber plates, and had a front end alignment done just yesterday.

I do not remember having this shake before any of the above mentioned mods added. Including the newe tires.

Where should I start looking? Is this just an off balanced tire? What eludes me is the intermittent shake at every 4 seconds?

Anyone got any ideas? I did a search but none of the feedback included intermittent shakes.

Any info will be greatly apprecated.

    Cheers

You have a front wheel bearing going out.

Or your driveshaft is out of balance... may need U-Joints.

If you you only feel it in the steering wheel, and not in your seat... It is in the front of the car.

Rotate the tires, did it help?

Does the vibration go through the car from front, to back??

    Rickyracer,

Vibration is only in the steering wheel! Rest of the car feels fine.

I am going to rule out wheel bearing as I'm not sure the alignment shop would have been able to align the car if one was on its way out?

Unfortunately the tires are directional, and the wheels are offset so no rotation possible.

Any other ideas? Thanks for the feedback

    Cheers

To check the wheel bearing jack the car up and grab the tire by the top and bottom (12 and 6 O'Clock) push and pull with each hand and if there is movement then it is a bad bearing. Call the alignment shop and ask if they checked the bearings.

You will feel bad u-joints in the seat, not the wheel so it sounds like that is not it.

Just got off the phone with the alignment tech. Claims he didn't notice any issues with bears but did mention that one wheel had an excessive amount I'd weights added. Over a quartet of the wheels diameter is weighted.

I'm thinking a bad tire or bent rim at this point!? Will try and get the car in and see about a re-balance. Tires have less than 100 miles on them.

    Thanks again for the feedback

Front tire balance. Comes and goes is normal for out of balance tire. Have tire shop spin up before rebalance. Should prove your point.

Not on my mustang but had similar symptoms / conditions once with a front tire that ended up having a broken cord.... finally found it after taking the wheel off and noticing a deformed spot on the tread....

Just got back from tire shop. Turns out the tires were mis-balanced the first time and the tech.. Who no longer works there, discarded the hub centric rings required for my rims.

So basically the way the wheels mounted to the hub made them off center without the rings.

I'm good to go for now! Just need to save up and get those Hyper Black Roush rims and ditch the chromies!!

    Thanks for all the feedback

    Cheers
