FnSweet Roush, Mustang, Ford Track Day GTG at Phoenix

After some gyrations we have come together with a plan for the weekend of September 25-26th here in Phoenix. We invite all the local peeps as well as those from neighboring states to come down to Firebird Speedway to take down a track day, come to a cruise in, and even do dinner on Friday night.

Here is the schedule and information:

    Friday Nite:

Dinner at Arriba Mexican Grill on East Chandler Blvd on Friday night. Arriba is one of our best local Mexican Restaurants. Dinner is at 6:30pm. Restaurant is located one exit up from the race track and at the same location as the listed hotels below. Mexican Restaurant in AHWATUKEE (( Arriba Mexican Grill ))

    Saturday Morning/Day:

Track day at Firebird. (Instructors and class time available) Welcome to ProAutosports!

First timers will pay $100 flat for school etc. and use code – NEWFNSWEET

Returning drivers will need to renew membership and will receive 20% off total with code - FNSWEET

You can register online here: ProAutoSports > Upcoming Events - MotorsportReg.com

    Saturday Afternoon/Evening:

Cruise-in/show-off at Pavillions Scottsdale: Approx 6:00 pm Directions and Maps The shopping center hosts a massive car show every Saturday night with muscle cars, classics, exotics, imports, and cycles. Lots of restaurants on site for dinner. About 25 minutes north of race track.

    Sunday:

Optional track time (No instruction available)

    Local Notes:

The Wild Horse Pass Indian Casino is located adjacent to the race track and hotels. Wild Horse Pass - Gila River Indian Community

The Loves Truckstop across the freeway from the race track sells RACE GAS.

    Hotels:

We do not have any special deals with these hotels, but they are all at the same exit of Chandler Blvd. at I-10, which is one exit up from the race track.

    Should be a great weekend!

    A couple things to add...

Ron and I (and hopefully Woodbeck) will be at the track all three days (Friday through Sunday). We will be racing on Saturday and Sunday with practice on Friday. If any of you want to make a three-day event out of it, I would suspect that you could take the Performance Driving Class (PDP) on Friday. This will have to be verified. We can try to secure a large area in the paddock to accommodate as many of you as we can. We can also share experiences and give a little instruction, if you wish of course.

For those of you aren't familiar with the Pavilion's Car Show, you are in for a treat. This is touted as the longest running weekly car show in the state, if not the nation. The turnout is usually in the 250-300 car arena.

We will be attending. We will also be bringing a lot of local customers. Sounds like a good time.

So Bill, do you have an estimate on the number of local customers that are planning on coming?

OK, I'm interested in this track day experience....but let me ask a few noob questions first.

    1. I have absolutely zero track experience of any kind.
    2. I'm not too paranoid about my car, but I would certainly prefer not to hose it up.
    3. I really don't want to hose up somebody else's car or the track.
    4. Do I have to drain the coolant and go with plain H2O?
    5. I only have the 2007 stock Coopers and probably don't have time to coordinate an upgrade. Will it be worthwhile or diappointing on these tires?
    6. I have the basic 14" 427R brake upgrades, but not the full on Roush brake upgrades or an equivalent. It will probably still be pretty hot in Phoenix in late September, so is this a concern?
    7. I'm a nerdy, overweight, middle aged guy whose wife thinks it's crazy to take my hot rod to a track day and who likes Rush and video games. Am I gonna fit in or feel like a complete doofus all day?

You can just come down and spectate, take a ride with one of the other people and do the cruise-in/show on Saturday afternoon/evening. We are working on a display parking area at the track also for those less interested in tracking their cars.

Although taking the open track opportunity is not nearly as intimidating as it sounds. They have a great class set up for first timers, with instructors who really do well to put you at ease and equip you for the drive. You can also have them ride with you and take it at your own speed. They are friendly, easy going and no pressure to do things with your car you might be ready for.

    You'd be surprised.

Some clubs attract younger drivers especially ones that highlight the imports. Most track clubs are across the board in terms of age. I run with Shelby Club which could be described as "Old guys with cool cars".

    1. Track experience not necessary, only desire to enjoy your car.
2 & 3. You drive at the speed and aggressiveness that you are comfortable with. I was anxious the first time too. Once I realized I controlled my speed, it was a blast.
    4. No, coolant is fine. It would be a good idea to add some Wetter Water to both your radiator and intercooler systems.
    5. The Coopers will be fine for the first time. As you becomes more comfortable, you will probably want to upgrade though. They will definitely be “worthwhile” to get your feet wet.
    6. Not sure what you mean by the “basic 14” 427R brake upgrades” if they are not ROUSH. I suspect they are and they will be fine. I do suggest that you upgrade your pads to the Hawk HPS’ all around. Make sure to bed them in properly. You can get them from Stage 3 Motorsports at a discount if you let them know you are a fnsweet member.
    7. Join the club. You’ll fit in just as long as you are an enthusiast. Oh, and check out the quote in my signature below...

Checkout some of the links in this thread. Lots of good info in them…

Old guy here with a cool car. And ok, a little over weight too...…

Steve, are you going to make it?

Don't worry we are all over weight mid-aged fools. This track is not very technical at all. after a quick class room instruction and a few laps you'll be fine. Frank or myself will be your track instructor.
this will not be racing. There is no side by side running in the red group.
    Your coolant will be fine.
Your coopers will be just fine. The only thing i would look at is the brake pads.
I would not go on the track with less then 75% pad left.
I like rush too, There my favorite band. So lets throw in the Fly by nite cd and rock this bitch.
No the heat wont be a issuse. We will just turn on the A/C and go!! lol

Sign up and will see you there.
