    Hawk Pads

    Do any of you guys need Hawk pads, especially if you going to Stan’s track day at the end of the month? I’ve got a distributor for them and if you need some I can have them in stock within 2-3 days.

    Steve aka 2001 S3 #92,

    I asked about pads for your Alcons calipers and they said they have a few that might work they would need a tracing of your old pads along with measurement to see if they have something that will work.

    Depending on how many orders are place I'll see what I can offer in pricing.

    I could be interested in a set. I'm not sure exactly which or their compounds to go for.

    I might like to get some in the future once we find out what works with those Alcon's on the S3s, but I got new pads with my brakes so I'm good on that front.

    The question I really had is >> What type of brake fluid should I have put in my car when I get the brakes installed? Now remember, its an occasional driver with hopefully more to come track time on it, and I will be at Stan's event at the end of this month. Please, a good answer soon would be nice...

    Try Motul (sp) I've heard good things about it from others.

    I take it that's all ya need to know about it, Motul? Is there a version of it or sub product name by chance, or just Motul?

    Baer sells Alcon brakes in the US. I'm almost certain Roush uses the Alcon 4 piston B-Type (Baer calls it their Pro+ system).

    According to the Baer catalog, they list the Pagid 7700-RSxx , Textar 7700-ST9, and SBS 3002-xx-TH16. The xx determine the material used. This might help provide a cross-reference.

    Mario...I continuously use these two pads from Hawk. They have proven over many track events to do the best for me.

    Front set.....HB194N.665 HP+

    Rear set......HB183F.585 HP+ or HPS

    Let me know what you can do for price, I usually buy 2 fronts and 2 rears per time from MM. I think I have bought 8 sets this year. I am down to my last set of spares so may be interested in buying 2 sets of fronts and rears.

    What process do you use to bed the pads?

    Pagid recommends:
    Drive at approx. 35 mph (60 kmh) for about 500 yards (solid front discs) to 800 yards (vented front discs) while slightly dragging the brakes (i.e. light brake pedal pressure)._ This process allows the brake temperature to slowly and evenly build up to 300°C (572°F).
    * Now, if possible, drive about 2200 yards maintaining the same speed without braking._ This will allow the pads and discs to cool down evenly._ After this cool-down, perform a normal brake application from 35 mph to 0._ No panic stops!

    Hawk's recommendations (listed for race conditions):
    Step 1. Seal all brake ducts. Step 2. Slowly engage brakes 6 to 8 times at medium speeds Do not drag brakes or come to a complete stop. Step 3. Increase speeds to simulate race conditions; allow 6 to 8 high pressure (about 500 psi) snubs at racing speeds. Total engagements for Step 2 and Step 3 should be a maximum of 15 to 20. Step 4. Remove brake duct seals. Allow the system to cool for about 15 minutes. Do not engage brakes while car is parked during cool down period.

    I had another one either from Roush or from Alcon who recommended something similar to Pagid except they included some high speed slowdowns after cooling off from the low speed runs.

    Why do you use the HP + instead of the Blues in front? Are you that easy on your brakes?

    Steve, the hawk pads bed in fairly fast. i just do 5 or 6 light stops and then 4 medium stops. Let them cool off a bit and then do a couple more meduim to hard stops. This seems to work well and can be done at the track quite easily. The front pads are very easy to change on the Brembos, so I always have a spare set of bedded pads in my tool box at the track. The rears are more of a pain to change, but again I usually have a spare set, but not bedded.

    Eric, I guess I am easy on them now, it wasn't always that way though. I have gotten a lot better at knowing how and when to brake, as well as choosing a setup that works for me. I had a setup early last year that caused me to go through two sets of rear pads in 10 laps. Now I can go a min of 3 events (110-120 laps) without even thinking about them. Checkout the two trails of brake dust behind the car.
