Another problem....

hey all... i seem to have another problem with the car it is bogging down on acceleration and hesitates. i dont have a check engine light on or anything that would help me out. when cats go bad what kinda of symptoms would you get and what are some other things that i would be able to check? thanks

Notice your idle hanging low or dropping low? Sounds like you need to clean out the IAC(idle air control), run a fuel system cleaning(seafoam) and clean out the throttle body with some carb cleaner. The inside tends to get carbon build up which holds up yout throttle plate and can cause hesitation

ill try that. the idle does go down low when coming to a stop some times. a clogged injector would be appearant almost all the time....especially under any acceleration...right? what kind of symptoms does the fuel pump make when its going out?

88k, all regular maintenance has been done. any ideas?

Chances are those things I mentioned havent been done, or its been a long time since theyve been done. Take your intake off of the throttle body and open the plate up. See if you can see black carbon on the plate or behind the plate on the plenum. If so follow that link I posted. You probably just need a whole fuel system cleaning. That should be done every 25k miles or so. Also clean your air filter or replace it.

If your gas mileage hasnt changed drastically, I cant imagine its the pump/injectors

nah gas mileage has always been not very good, heavy foot lol. i will check out those things alittle later today or first thing tomorrow. any specific cleaner i should use?

Any carb cleaner would work to clean out the throttle body, plenum and IAC. The IAC is on the driver side right next to the throttle body. There should be a hose attached to it, But just pull it off and you can spray or wipe out whatever is in there

If youre going to do the entire fuel system cleaning, Id recommend Seafoam

If he has a heavy foot he probubly wouldnt even notice the gas mileage, I have never kept track of mine.

i do have a heavy foot and only keep track of mpg on trips....so a bad fuel pump would only fail under load or accel,....right?

thanks guys i appreciate all the input. its fixed. turns out that the fuel filter was very very dirty. must have got some bad fuel some where.but its fixed now so thats all that matters, just glad wasnt something more....

Just a side note and not to doubt your repair, but when mine was doing as you described, I changed the fuel filter, only to have the same condition return a very short time later.

i am hoping that thats all it was....when i took off the old fuel filter i could see that the gas was dirty. so we will see. again thanks every one!

bad gas does a whole mess of crap to your car, you did the right thing by starting with the cheapest part... if the problem comes back I would plan on replacing your fuel pump and also you fuel injectors.....
