Brake Squeal...can't figure it out

Ok...the Cobra has 6 piston Wilwood brakes. Now, they are fine going forward..but in reverse, they squeal like crazy, even with just a little pressure applied. Now what would cause them to squeal only in reverse EVERY time but not while driving forward?

Hmmm, I would think lack of anti-moan brackets or whatever they're called, but I'd think it'd be both directions. You have any idea what type of pads are on there?

I'm wondering if it has to do with the edges of the brake pads. I normally round off the edges on mine. With the brakes always going in one direction maybe they ceeated a sharp edge causing the squeal. I don't know just a thought.

Maybe the prior owner didn't add the anti reverse squeal grease?

That's really weird. Don't think I've heard of that happening though.

It happens to mine after I installed the alcons. Only in reverse does it squeal!

Annoying as hell too!

i had my mechanic take a look and see if the pads were wearing funny or anything while he had it there to change the oil. He said the pads looked fairly new. Only thing he noticed is that it didn't have shims. He said he didn't know anything about these brake kit and didn't know if it wasn't suppose to have them or not. Could this be it?

Also I was thinking...in the trunk when I bought it there were 2 boxes of racing brake pads. What if there were racing composite pads on it now..would this maybe cause it? If so, how can i tell?

Bingo.
Hawk pads are labeled on backing plate- stock # and compound "HB711.650, HP+"
Brake pads are made to operate at different temperatures.
Street pads are made to be decent stopping, little dust and quiet on the rotors.
Race pads, well, they rarely get hot enough to work well on the street.
They are bedded in forward direction, but there may be enough bevel that one end hits before the other- why we have multiple pistons in the 1st place, but it still happens. Since they are not getting hot backing up...I hope, they aren't gripping real well and will vibrate or squeal.
You can coat the back of the pads with a special hight temp silicone where the pistons touch and that should damp most of the squeal.

If not, turn up the radio before you put it in reverse.
What did the boxes say? Any clue to types of pads?
