Question Canister Fuel Filter as Air/Oil Separator

Summit SUM-G1503 - Summit Racing Street & Strip Fuel Filters - summitracing.com

Just thought this might be/look a little nicer than a $10 plastic jar, yet cheaper than something like the $100 Moroso Separator. Would it work? Two ports at the top, and a place for any oil.

That'll work. Generally anything that has an in and an out threaded fitting, keeps the system sealed, and has a halfway intelligent drain system will work.

I did a Stef's catch can with a -10AN inlet. Plugged the intake and intake manifold PCV hose attachments. Had Joe weld -10AN fittings onto my valve covers where the stock grommets and tubes used to be. Aeroquip push-lock hose comes from each, Ts together, then goes to the catch can with breather. Since I've got the intake manifold and intake tube plugged my tuner said I'm AOK to run the breather filter on it "open system."

Looks pretty good, I have to figure out some way to support the hose (-10AN is about 7/8" so you can imagine how much drape it has) before I show it off. Looks pretty shitty in my mind right now but works good. I drained it after a week to see what was in there, maybe 1/4" of fluid. I'm guessing it would take the better part of the summer to fill it up to the level of the fitting where I would imagine it wouldn't fill anymore.

Hardest part about the job was ordering the correct fittings and planning it out in my head, then making it look halfway decent while keeping everything on a slight down angle so I don't get oil pooling in the lines. And finding someone who could tig weld the fittings to the valve covers in a good looking way.

I have heard of the Stef's catch can, which seemed pretty similar to the Moroso unit, but those alone are more than I want to spend on it. They do look nice though. The other reason is what you are mentioning; figuring out what AN fittings and adapters I'll need so everything fits together since those can get pricey.

If I get the above, I'll be getting chrome 90 degree fittings to go along with it, although I think I will be sticking with regular black tubing.

I haven't actually seen a completed system with Stef's Catch Can, so I will be looking forward to seeing it!

Thanks for the reply!

I can pull up my invoice when I get home, but I'm pretty sure I ordered $200.00 worth of stuff from Summit Racing.

Stef's 1 pint catch can -10AN STF - 5115
Earl's -10AN T fitting EAR-UP982410ERL
Aeroquip -10AN socketless hose end AER-FCE1514 QUANTITY FOUR
Aeroquip -10AN socketless hose end 90 degree AER-FCE1534 QUANTITY TWO
Summit weld in bungs SUM-220062 QUANTITY TWO
Aeroquip AQP black socketless hose 15ft. -10AN AER-FCN1015

All the shiny silver fittings and black tubing. I cheaped out once on a fuel system and went with the Summit Racing hose ends and fittings with the stainless braided lines and more than half the fittings leaked. Took it to a race shop (did not work for JDM at the time) and they confirmed the ends were installed correctly and pressure tested the lines, just shitty built ends. Won't make that mistake again. The only reason I went with the Summit weld ins is because they were the only one with the flat back face, the rest had a nipple or a ridge that would not work for my application.

to give you some idea, this was my stock PCV system. dark puke green is the throttle body, center is my intake manifold, light blue is intake tube, red is the pcv hoses, blue square is the pcv valve.

capped both them off (well, actually welded, but whatever), and in each valve cover where the hoses went this is the schematic I drew up before ordering...

every square is a hose end. T fitting is obvious. 90 degree bends on the covers with the weld in fittings. the passenger side one comes down and the hose is flexible enough to bend without kinking, that is not an extra fitting in there.

now I just have to find some way to support the rather heavy and large hose so it doesn't look like I chucked it all in there.

FYI: I did this completely for the appearance of it, there was absolutely no benefits otherwise to deleting the PCV system.

I just unplugged them from the intake and the back of the blower and put breathers in place. Blocked off the intake inlet and blower port with vacuum caps.

If your gonna use that fuel filter canister I would remove the paper filter inside as it will become saturated with oil and restrict flow.

Do you get oil all over the valve covers like I did?

I did it to keep oil off the intercooler/heat exchanger, whatever you wanna call it fins under the blower.
