    Supercharger or Turbo?

I have a basically stock 99 mustang gt with the typical bolt ons. ie: borla catback, bbk cai, going to be getting gears. I want to add either a kenne bell 2.1L suercharger or some type of turbo. I'm only looking to make around 400-450 hp. What do you guys suggest?

    KB all the way.

My 99 made 406.7 RWHP with 9lbs and the KB tune. You will love the immediate hit from a KB.

The only turbo I've ever driven was a T-bird supercoupe. So that was my only experience with lag.

What kit do you have? 1.7, 2.1, any other mods?

I had a stock 99 GT convertible, with only the Kenne Bell 1.7L intercooled kit, with a larger throttle body and a CAI.

Then I drove it under an SUV. The exact same setup on my 2000 Roush Stage 2 only made 390 RWHP. However, this wasn't with the KB tune, it was an extremely safe custom tune.

Looks like you want a fun street car. The KB will get you there. So will a turbo. If you want the least hassle, go with the KB. A turbo can be finicky and not that a supercharger doesn't come with maintenance or issues, those issues are multiplied with a turbo. A turbo at that power level won't have much lag but will still have lag. The KB will give you instant boost at any RPM which makes for a street car full of fun that feels like it has a big block.

    KB FTW.

I own a 2007 Roush thats Turbocharged, Ive owned both a Supercharger and a Turbo Mustang, each has their pros and cons, I find the Turbo alot more fun, this is my own preference so no one get upset. What I like about the Turbo is you can push your engine a bit more due to the fact that you dont have the motor spinning the supercharger so theres less stress put on your motor, Upgrading power is pretty easy with a change of a spring in wastegate and a tune. Plus the sound of a Turbo is much louder than a supercharger and definitly will get more attension from spectators especially if you show your car. Everyones got a supercharger!!!.. They are more $$$$ and tuning is more involved is the downfall, but if its done right its awesome. Ive raced a few Mustangs with Superchargers and havent lost yet, There is a slight lag, but not much. Especially if its tuned right, Lag isnt as bad as it once was. I dont notice it and Racing my friends GT500 from a 40MPH roll showed no issue building boost, By the way I smoked him bad, lol. If your car is Auto then break boosting will alow you to blast out of the hole like a rocket. The good thing about Superchargers is that they are pretty much simple compared to a Turbo. You can upgrade Pulley sizes for more power but the range for upgrading HP is alot smaller than a Turbo. If your just looking to have fun with car then a Supercharger is the way to go. I had a lot of fun with my Supercharger when I had it. They are great, especially the KB's. My Turbo kit is from HPPerformance.com Its adjustable from 450HP to 750HP, Im at 602 at Rear with 12lbs of boost. My Supercharger was 460 at rear wheels at 10 lbs boost. Another thing is since a Supercharger is always spinning your gas mileage is always gonna be affected, With the Turbo I still maintain 21-23 MPG The Turbo wont spool up unless I get on it so it drives like a Nat. Asp. car when driving normal. Your budget and what you are planning to use car for should be considered in your decision. I use my car for alot of shows, When I go to them there usually tons of Supercharged Stangs there, When I open my hood people flock, even the ricers. I didnt see another Turbo Mustang all summer, even at all Stang shows. My Mustang is being featured in April or May edition of Mustang Enthusiast, It was picked because I was only Turbo at Stang Fest in October. I hope I gave you some useful info, Not trying to influence your decision, but since Ive driven both even though Im in a S197 I figured I should share my experiances with you from one Stanger to another.

Correction: "With the Turbo I still maintain 21-23 MPG The Turbo and Supercharger wont spool up unless I get on it so it drives like a Nat. Asp. car when driving normal."
MPG will vary with the use of 'acceleration' not the type of force induction.
We don't want false impressions on the differences in either application. Boost is boost.

Smoke I disagree with your statement, When I 1st bought my Stang with the Supercharger I was always at 18-20 MPG, Reason being is having the Supercharger always spun by your motor. When I switched over to the Turbo, not having that belt and pulley on your motor frees up HP, plus your engine is under less stress and spins more freely, My Stang now gets 22-24 MPG with the Turbo driving normal in traffic so in the long run, A turbo system saves you gas, wear and tear on your motor. Boost is also different in both applications, A Supercharged car and a Turbo car both putting 600 at crank will be different at rear wheels. You will get more Rear wheel HP with the Turbo kit than the Supercharger. Granted the #'s can also changed slightly depending on manufacturer. But You need more boost with a SC to match rear wheel with a TC. Heres a good example, My buddy has a 2006 Mustang with a KB and a few other goodies, hes running 16 lbs boost and is putting 545 at rear, Im Turbo at 14lbs and putting 602 at rear. Hes running more boost but I have more power. We have played many times on Highway and he cant keep up, he might jump a car on take off but with a few secs , Im past him easily.

Get a belt driven turbo. Paxton over them both. They don't effect gas mileage much at all, you don't have to worry about over boosting, you don't have to have an intercooler with only 400 rwhp, they're easy to install and put the least amount of strain on a non forged motor and it's the cheapest route for your goal.

Either would be a good choice. I have had one turbo stang and several supercharged stangs and as long as done right they both will most likely make you happy. You make a decision yet?

I think I am going with the Kenne Bell 2.1L. I don't want to have to keep messin with a turbo. I just want to set it up and leave it. (as long as I'm happy with it). It won't happen for a while yet, since I just got laid off from my job

    Get a belt driven turbo.
uM....Superchargers are driven off the crankshaft or by belt from the crankshaft. Turbos are spun by exhaust gases. Right?
